Feng Shui: Orange You Happy?

Share

Feng Shui is an 8,000 year-old Chinese philosophy about the relationship between humans and their environment. Every item in a space and its placement is thought to either enhance or diminish our well-being.  Based on the laws of nature, logic and common sense, we have incorporated feng shui principles into our office.

The Color Orange in Feng ShuiHere in our Wilmington, NC office, we use color according to feng shui principles, which outline the relationship between color, nature, and the elements. Orange, for example, is associated with the feng shui element of fire. This probably doesn’t surprise you, since orange is such a warm, vibrant, and happy shade. True to its association with fire, orange gets your attention—why else do we use it for caution cones, road signs, and other everyday tasks that spur alertness and call for a good look?

In feng shui, orange is said to add playful energy to a space, so it is ideal for rooms that benefit from such energy, like children’s playrooms and kitchens. In these spaces, happy shades of orange lighten the mood and make you feel bright and energetic. If you tend to be sad in the winter, incorporating orange into your home or workspace can help return some fire energy to cold spaces that lack sunshine. Some feng shui experts call orange the color of “social activity, joy, fun, and interaction,” and also recommend it for rooms where you socialize with friends.

In our office, we use orange on a limited basis for these same reasons. For example, small orange-red circles on our glass front door enhance the energy flow, or qi dynamics of the entryway, but we’ve chosen not to use stronger, larger orange elements. Entirely orange walls within our Wilmington space would add vibrancy and grab our clients’ attention, however, too much orange can also be overwhelming or distracting.

When using feng shui within a space, it is essential to understand the mood and ambiance you wish to create in the final space. For our Wilmington, NC office, our goal was to create a soft, soothing atmosphere for our patients, so we reserved orange for accents, rather than primary elements.
