Hiccup Help? Hiccups and Acupuncture

hiccups and acupunctureWhile many of our clients think of acupuncture as a way to treat illnesses and chronic conditions, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can be used for day-to-day issues, too.

In our Wilmington, NC office, we  see many patients with minor aches and pains, usually caused by imbalances in the body’s energy, or qi. When the body’s energy becomes blocked or unbalanced, it is necessary to use acupuncture and other therapies to return balance to the body.

Hiccups, which are caused by contractions in the diaphragm, are one of those run-of-the-mill problems that can become chronically irritating. Did you know that thousands of Americans end up in the hospital each year because of hiccups? In fact, the record for the longest case of hiccups is over sixty years!  Frequent hiccups “can be caused by stress, nerve damage, tumors, infections,” and can lead to “weight loss, exhaustion, and insomnia.”

Patients with chronic illnesses may suffer from hiccups as a side effect of medications and treatments.  The US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health reported on a case where acupuncture helped “rapidly” alleviate hiccup symptoms in a patient who had suffered a heart attack and had the hiccups for 7 days, despite being given a host of different pharmaceuticals in an attempt to alleviate the condition!

Even if your hiccups aren’t as dramatic, they can still be an impediment to daily activities. In Chinese traditional medicine, hiccups are usually associated with the stomach and a condition called Rebellious Qi, so treatment involves restoring balance to the stomach and its functions in digestion.

If you are suffering from hiccups or other issues, call us at our Wilmington, NC office today- 910.798.8181- to discuss an individualized treatment plan for you.
