Acupuncture and the Baby Blues? Postpartum Depression

Share

acupuncture for postpartum depressionSometimes referred to as ‘the baby blues,’ postpartum depression is a serious medical condition that requires treatment. In our Wilmington, NC office, we use acupuncture to help women who are suffering from postpartum depression and may be concerned about the safety of other treatments. With all my clients, I create an individualized treatment plan that can complement Western medical treatments.

Acupuncture is increasingly used to treat depression during and after pregnancy. According to a recent New York Times article on acupuncture’s role in treatment for postpartum depression, as many as “14 percent of new mothers” suffer from this form of depression. Depression in mothers during pregnancy can have a negative impact on their children, including lower birth weights and delayed development. Because of the dangers of side effects from antidepressants in pregnant and nursing women, acupuncture has been studied as a safer form of treatment. As stated in The New York Times:

“Researchers at Stanford University tested alternative treatments and antidepressants for pregnant women and found that acupuncture specifically designed to treat depression is a potential substitute. Sixty-three percent of women who received that treatment responded well, compared with only 44 percent who received massage therapy or acupuncture that was not specifically designed for depression.”
